Maltese Says Goodbye

From intern Adam Rose:

In the end, there was pizza, pasta and, rumor has it, a cake with a picture of Serf Maltese’s face on it.

But no one was happy at the Maltese victory party at the Friends of Serf Maltese headquarters on Myrtle Avenue in Glendale.

Swamped by an Obama-inspired Democratic tidal wave, Maltese, and quite possible his State Senate Republicans, had lost.

“It looks like it was overwhelmingly Obama... and the circumstances are such that it was not something we could achieve,” Maltese told the 50-odd supporters who had turned up, as he conceded the race to his Democratic challenger, City Councilman Joe Addabbo.

Minority Leader Skelos

No one worked harder to be Minority Leader than Dean Skelos and his campaign team.

They hired a guy who had been an advanceman just two years ago as the Executive Director of the Senate Republican Campaign Committee.

They paid him $30,000 a month! And they kept him on payroll even after they learned he was spending an inordinate amount of time doing side projects for a former employer.

Then they hired another consultant who was responsible for one of their most humiliating Senate defeats -- and for giving Pataki and the State GOP a black eye with their nasty campaign for Bush against McCain in 2000 -- and paid him as a super consultant, to watch the former advanceman.

Then they took a group of challenger candidates and insisted they spend huge amounts of money on mail and TV over the summer months when no voters were paying attention.

And when Labor Day rolled around, they "produced" polls that showed these challenger candidates hadn't gained any traction over the summer, and cut them off completely, just as voters were beginning to pay attention to the campaign.

Congratulations, Minority Leader Skelos.

Job well done!
