United Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten isn’t buying David Paterson’s argument that his new round of budget adjustments is only slowing the rate of increases in funds for education, not making cuts.
With approximately 200 people gathered around her on the City Hall steps moments ago, Weingarten said, “I just got a copy of what the governor is proposing.” She held up a document. "And there are real cuts in the middle of the year. Real cuts in the middle of the year in education are doubly devastating because what happens is they are actually double the amount of cuts that happen in the beginning of the year."
Weingarten went on, "But more important than that, it completely destabilizes the school and it changes the situation for kids. Kids need stability in a time like this.”
