At a press conference in Brooklyn this afternoon to announce tougher rules to home heating oil meter-readers from overcharging, Michael Bloomberg was asked by a reporter how he heats his own home.

“It’s oil,” Bloomberg said.

He advised people to be conservative with energy use and, Carter-like, to "wear a sweater."

UPDATE: It's brought to my attention that the mayor's "sweater" comment was specifically about city agency heads and city employees.

Mayor:

No, other than I’ve said, you know, try to lower the temperature. I’ve always liked things cold and a window open, anyway, so it’s not- but I think, for the City, we are talking about- talking to all the commissioners and all the maintenance people in all our buildings. You know, if you just change the temperature – we’re willing to live with a few degrees hotter in the summer, a few degrees colder in the winter – you’d make a very material change in your cost of energy and, overall for the City, it’s an enormous amount of money and these days we’re going to have to make lots of economies. It’s hardly a big deal to keep everybody working to, you know- wear a sweater, you know, if you’re chilly. Yes, sir?
